Bio
Haidong Wang, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Global Health at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington. A specialist in demography, Dr. Wang works on mortality estimation and projection for the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors (GBD) 2010 Study.
He is leading the work on building a new model life table system that is one of the foundational pieces for the ambitious GBD 2010 Study. Through the life table, IHME is generating sex and age specific mortality rates and death counts for countries dating back to 1970. As an extension of that work, Dr. Wang was one of the leaders of the IHME research team that identified new trends in global child mortality and adult mortality in 2010.
Before joining the faculty at IHME, Dr. Wang was an IHME Post-Graduate Fellow. Dr. Wang received his PhD in Demography from the Population Studies Center at University of Pennsylvania.
At Penn, he worked on various projects on mortality estimation and projections including sex mortality differentials in the United States, forecasting adult mortality using cohort smoking histories, and the interrelationship between physical activity and cognitive function among the elderly. He earned his MA in Economics, a BA in Economics and a BA in Sociology from Peking University.
