Alumni Profile
Alison Levin-Rector was a member of the Demographics: Mortality and Population research team, the Impact Evaluations research team, and the US County Performance team. In her role on the Demographics team, Alison worked on the Gates Grand Challenge 13 project to improve methods for estimating population health status. Alison applied methods to generate estimates of child, adult, and old age mortality. In her work on the Impact Evaluations team, Alison studied trends in HIV prevalence in India and its relationship with the Avahan HIV intervention program.
Alison’s work on the Avahan project suggests that Avahan had a beneficial effect in reducing HIV prevalence in some Indian states, and more broadly indicates that investment in well planned and managed HIV prevention programs are effective in low-income and middle-income countries. Alison’s work on the US County Performance team led to one of IHME’s signature publications, an analysis that compared life expectancy by county in the US to nations around the world.
Alison earned her Master in Public Health at the University of Washington in 2011. Alison now lives in New York and works as a data manager for Mt. Sinai Hospital. Since leaving IHME, she has worked as a consultant to update the life expectancy estimates.
