The symposium will bring together key maternal and child health experts to discuss the most recent studies on maternal and child and mortality and the policy implications for the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals for reducing child and maternal deaths by 2015. IHME’s latest study on child mortality will be published in The Lancet the same day. The all day event is designed to initiate vigorous scientific dialogue around the data and analytic approaches used in determining maternal and child mortality rates around the world. The symposium will also highlight the critical role that multiple organizations play in analyzing and disseminating mortality findings in order to strengthen overall methods and results. The symposium will be moderated by The Lancet Editor-in-Chief Richard Horton and will feature two panels, one focused on maternal mortality and the other on child mortality. Efforts to achieve greater declines in maternal and child mortality will receive additional attention this summer as several international meetings highlight maternal and child health: the Women Deliver and Global Health Council conferences in Washington, DC; the G8 Summit in Canada, where a new maternal and child health initiative will be discussed; the Pacific Health Summit in London; and the MDG Summit in New York. In response to this intense focus on maternal and child health as part of the global development agenda, we believe a discussion such as this is critically important and the collective wisdom of an engaged and open community is paramount. We hope you will be able to join us. RSVP: Please contact Summer Ohno at slohno@uw.edu or call (206) 897-2891.
