IHME co-hosts Global Health Metrics and Evaluation (GHME) conference 2011

Event

The Global Health Metrics & Evaluation (GHME) conference hosted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), The Lancet, Harvard School of Public Health, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and the University of Queensland School of Population Health attracted more than 600 people over three days and covered a wide range of global health topics.

The goal of the conference was to bring together the different disciplines involved in global health measurement and evaluation to share innovative tools and methods and to debate the best ways to translate data into cost-effective policy for improved population health. Researchers, academics, students, and representatives from non-governmental organizations, foundations, governments, and national and multinational health organizations were all in attendance.

The conference sessions included:

Measuring maternal mortality
Noncommunicable disease transitions: rich and poor countries
Emerging methods
Trends in health inequalities
Indicators and targets for a post-millennium development goal world
Integrated surveillance systems across traditional boundaries
New quantitative tools for priority setting
Next generation of health system performance metrics
Controversies in the burden of malaria
Responsible data sharing and strengthening country capacity for analysis

The conference also offered a number of workshops including:

Examples of spatial-temporal analyses
Methods for synthesizing data from multiple sources
Next generation of verbal autopsy instruments and methods: reflections from the Global Congress on Verbal Autopsy in Bali, Indonesia
Spatial statistics workflows
Data visualization tools and GIS

The Global Health Data Exchange (GHDx), IHME’s new catalog of the world’s health and demographic datasets, was unveiled at the conference, providing the public with a robust search engine and intuitive user interface to make finding data easy.
