Mohammad Hossein Forouzanfar

Bio

Mohammad (Mehrdad) Forouzanfar, MD, PhD, is primarily involved with one of IHME’s core projects: the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2010 (GBD 2010). As a member of this research team, he models different diseases to estimate mortality and the prevalence of sequelae, or the consequences of diseases and injuries. With the results of GBD 2010 published, he is overseeing the process of updating the estimates of disease burden associated with cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other conditions.

Dr. Forouzanfar also facilitates connections between IHME’s research and several external research projects funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in a concerted effort to improve the sharing of data and findings across studies. One such external study is the Global Enterics Multi-Center Study (GEMS), a prospective case-control study of acute diarrhea in children 0 to 59 months of age, which is being conducted at multiple sites in Africa and Asia. Another study participating in this collaboration is the PERCH (Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health) project, which is a multi-country, case-control study of hospitalized patients with severe lower respiratory illnesses to determine etiology and risk factors associated with the syndrome.

Prior to joining IHME, Dr. Forouzanfar worked as an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology in the School of Public Health at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, where he earned his Doctorate of Medicine and his PhD in Epidemiology. For his dissertation, he studied the effectiveness of hepatitis B immunizations, and his work helped persuade Iran’s policymakers to begin immunizing teenagers against hepatitis B.
