Reliable estimates for maternal deaths and sound scientific methods for calculating maternal mortality are essential for policymakers and public health officials working to improve the health of women and children. IHME hosted this workshop in São Paulo to bring people together from around the world to discuss maternal mortality trends across Latin America and to consider the strengths and weaknesses of current scientific approaches to estimating maternal mortality.
Academics, researchers, and Ministry of Health officials participated in the workshop where we collectively explored the factors that drive maternal mortality around the world and how they affect local communities in Latin America, and examined previous estimates and upcoming challenges in the region.
