Members of the World Health Organization (WHO) Department of Measurement and Health Information Systems serve on the core team of the Global Burden of Disease Study, led by IHME. The new Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors (GBD) 2010 Study began in the spring of 2007 and is the first major effort since the GBD Study 1990 to carry out a complete systematic assessment of the data on all diseases and injuries.
The result will be comprehensive and comparable estimates of the burden of diseases, injuries, and risk factors for the years 1990, 2005, and 2010. The GBD Study will produce estimates for more than 200 conditions and 40 risk factors.
WHO members organized condition-specific expert groups to carry out systematic reviews, provided instrumental disease modeling for the study, and helped to guide the overall intellectual direction of the study. They will be key participants in the final generation of estimates.
