The International Network for the Demographic Evaluation of Populations and Their Health in Developing Countries (INDEPTH), with central offices in Ghana, is a global network of members who conduct longitudinal health and demographic evaluation of populations in low- and middle-income countries, with the aims of strengthening global capacity for Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems and mounting multisite research to guide health priorities and policies in these countries based on up-to-date scientific evidence.
Numerous sites within the INDEPTH Network utilize verbal autopsies as a means for more accurately estimating cause-specific mortality within a population with insufficient vital registration systems.
The principle behind verbal autopsies is that responses from next of kin of the deceased about the signs, symptoms, and other key characteristics displayed before death can be used to estimate the likely cause of death.
The implementation of verbal autopsy questionnaires within a community can be used to ascertain the population-level causes of death to better inform policymakers, donors, and health facilities in the area.
As a leader in verbal autopsy collection, the INDEPTH Network provides valuable experience and insight into verbal autopsy practices.
IHME worked with the INDEPTH Network and other leaders in the field to plan the Global Congress on Verbal Autopsy: State of the Science in early 2011 to convene key researchers and government representatives. The Congress provided a means to facilitate a robust discussion of advances in verbal autopsy methods and implementation and to encourage the future use of this important tool.
