Risk Factors
Research Team
Work by the Risk Factors research team has played an essential role in IHME’s ground-breaking Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2010 and our work in health information systems. To better measure global health, IHME researchers generate systematic estimates of risk factors. The research team's work will inform policymakers and researchers on the prevalence of risk factors in a population. With this information, targeted interventions can be created to address a population’s most pressing health issues.
Key Activities
- Produce and publish estimates by country for select risk factors
Country-specific time estimates of key risk factors are likely to be of interest to researchers, donors, and policymakers. For risk factors of particular interest, the research team will pursue production of estimates for all countries and prepare those estimates for separate publication. In many cases, it will be most appropriate to pursue these publications in collaboration with key experts who have contributed over time to the analytic work with IHME.
- Pending funding, begin routine updating of estimates of burden attributable to each of 67 risk factors
The research, policy, and donor communities would benefit from more timely production of risk factor estimation. To achieve routine updates to the full set of 67 risk factors would require additional resources to expand the infrastructure as needed, make more efficient the computational tools to derive estimates, and support over the long term regular ongoing reviews of the relevant epidemiological literature. Routinely updating the risk factor estimates would also require the development and implementation of visualization tools similar to those developed for the cause of death in order to assess trends in data and results. If funding is received, the research team will begin this endeavor in FY13.
Impact
Work by the Risk Factors research team will inform policymakers and researchers on the prevalence of risk factors in a population. With this information, targeted interventions can be created to address a population’s most pressing health issues.
