Bed net ownership, use, and distribution in relation to socioeconomic variables and child mortality, by country (Global), 1999-2008
Bed net ownership rises sharply among populations at risk for malaria
View the transformation of African countries with significant populations at risk for malaria between 1999 and 2008. In countries that just a little more than a decade ago had almost no homes with insecticide-treated bed nets, now the majority of homes own at least one bed net. Data are presented as bubbles, columns, or lines.
The estimates on bed net ownership are from research published in PLoS Medicine in August 2010.

How to ExploreData StoriesTerms Defined
- Hit play and watch changes over time.
- Select specific countries to watch; you can turn 'Trails' on or off to see the complete pattern of a country over time.
- Next to the x-axis and y-axis labels, you can click the arrow to choose different indicators to display in the graph and/or change to linear vs. logarithmic scale.
- Click and drag a rectangle within the graph plot to zoom in on that area; this may be especially helpful when trying to view specific country trends.
- Change the graph from a line chart to a bubble view using the tab in the top right corner of the visualization.
- The rapid scale up and coverage in at-risk ownership in some countries is striking. Select from the country list the following: Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Mali. None of them had a coverage rate in the population at risk of more than 20% in 1999. By 2008, though, all of them had a coverage rate higher than 80%.
- See how a country can have a large number of nets being distributed but not necessarily being used. Choose “LLNs Distributed” on the left and at the bottom. In the country list, choose Senegal, Togo, and Zambia. Move the year button back to 1999 and hit play. You will see all of these countries shoot up in the number of nets distributed per capita, eventually becoming the three countries with the most nets distributed per capita in 2008. Now switch the menus at the left and bottom to “% ITN use U5 Pop. At Risk.” Now the countries fall in the rankings. Zambia still has a fairly high coverage rate at more than 60%, but Senegal and Togo have both fallen to 40% and lower.
- % ITN Ownership: Percent of households that own at least one insecticide treated bed net (ITN)
- % ITN Ownership Pop. at Risk: Percent of households that own at least one ITN among populations at risk for malaria
- % ITN Use U5: Percent of children under the age of 5 years who slept under an ITN
- % ITN Use U5 Pop. at Risk: Percent of children under the age of 5 years who slept under an ITN among populations at risk for malaria
- LLINs Distributed: Long lasting insecticide treated bed-nets distributed or purchased per capita
- GDP (USD): Gross Domestic Product per capita expressed as constant US$ (1999-2007)
- Under 5 Mortality (5q0)(Rate): Probability of death from birth to age 5, expressed as deaths per 1,000 live births
