![]() Health OutcomesIHME’s research on health outcomes is divided into four distinct areas: mortality, causes of death, functional health status, and overall burden of disease and comparative risk assessment. Combined, these outcomes form an overall picture of a population’s health and the many factors which influence it. The rates of road traffic injuries, prevalence of malaria, extent of disability caused by mental health disorders, and deaths from various forms of cancer, are all examples of the types of data the Health Outcomes team is analyzing to better understand and describe the health status of all people around the world. The research team also develops new methodological tools for estimating population-level health when existing methods are inadequate. Obtaining accurate health outcome information is critical for advancing public health; for example, decision-makers must know what is making people sick in order to design appropriate prevention programs or know where to target the delivery of drugs and vaccines in order to maximize the benefits to the communities they serve.
