Post-Bachelor Fellowship Program
Program Description
The purpose of the fellowship is to:
- Cultivate talented young professionals to create future leaders in global health through an improved understanding of the connection between high-quality information and improving health outcomes
- Advance fellows’ aptitude in developing and applying sophisticated analytical methods
- Develop fellows’ understanding of the current global health landscape and its challenges
- Prepare fellows for future positions in a range of careers, including academia, national health agencies, international organizations, foundations, and private companies
- Provide a mentoring and learning environment for recent college graduates
The PBF program involves a minimum two-year commitment commencing with training and orientation in early September. PBFs have the option of applying to a fully funded MPH in Global Health, starting in the second year of the fellowship. Fellows receive a salary of $35,004 and are eligible for an insurance benefits package that includes a choice among several medical and dental insurance plans, life insurance, and long-term disability. There is no retirement package included with this appointment.
Post-Bachelor Fellowship program components
- Training Camp: At the beginning of the program, each cohort of fellows participates in a two-week training to introduce key health research topics and methodologies.
- Metrics Research Methods Seminar: Each week, fellows meet to evaluate an article concerning a current global health issue. The intention of these sessions is two fold: 1) to expose fellows to a broader set of topics in global health, and 2) to develop their abilities to understand, assess, and critique research results effectively.
- Weekly Seminars: Researchers from outside of IHME present their work to highlight studies being done by the broader global health community and continue an ongoing dialogue.
- Breakfast Club Seminars: IHME’s internal researchers discuss work-in-progress and receive feedback from their colleagues, helping them consider different viewpoints and research strategies as they advance their projects.
- Training Workshops: To support the fellows’ professional and developmental growth, IHME sponsors workshops to further the cohorts’ expertise in quantitative analytical techniques and tools.
- Mentorship: Fellows are supervised and mentored by faculty and researchers who provide direct guidance in academic and professional development. Mentorship facilitates the fellows’ ongoing learning and development as professionals, individuals, and global health researchers while advancing the IHME research agenda.
- Course Work: Regardless of whether fellows are pursuing a degree program, they are encouraged to take classes at the University of Washington.
- Research-Abroad: An important component of the PBF program is a research abroad experience where second-year fellows live and work in a location where data are being collected and analyzed.
