About the Application Process

Who is eligible to apply for this program?

The Post-Graduate Fellowship is open to national and international candidates with a PhD or MD degree. Occasionally, we accept individuals who have earned a master’s degree and have several years of experience on analytical projects with a strong quantitative component.

Is English proficiency required to apply for the program?

Yes. Applicants whose native language is not English must submit TOEFL (or equivalent) scores or have a degree from an institution that uses English as the instructional language.

What research experience and educational background are required to apply to the Post-Graduate Fellowship?

We accept applications from candidates in all fields who have quantitative or analytical backgrounds and experience in research methods and models. Candidates must have a sincere desire to work in health metrics.

Is it required that I complete my degree before entering the Post-Graduate Fellowship?

Yes. Before you begin the PGF program, you must show proof that you have acquired your MD or PhD. If candidates selected for the PGF program have not completed their degrees by the start of their cohort, the offer will be rescinded.

Can I re-apply for the Post-Graduate Fellowship program?

You may reapply if your application has been rejected. However, the number of applications to the program has been increasing over time, so we anticipate that the program will only become more competitive. Are late applications accepted?

No. Those who submit an application after the deadline can request that the application be reactivated for the following cohort by contacting: pgf@healthmetricsandevaluation.org.

How many Post-Graduate Fellows are hired for each cohort?

The number of Fellows hired for each cohort varies depending on funding as well as the research and project needs of IHME. To see previous cohorts, please visit our Post-Graduate Fellowship Program page.

Do you accept letters of recommendation by e-mail?

Yes. Please submit your letters of recommendation to: pgf@healthmetricsandevaluation.org.

Do you accept official transcripts electronically?

No. To complete your application, IHME must receive official transcripts by mail in sealed envelopes.


About the Program

When do Fellows start at IHME?

The Post-Graduate Fellowship currently has two cohorts per year. The fall cohort begins in September, and the winter cohort begins in February.

Is it possible to shorten the length of the Post-Graduate Fellowship program?

No. The minimum time commitment for the Post-Graduate Fellowship program is one year.

Will it be required to relocate to Seattle?

Yes. All research is done on site at IHME, and we require all staff to work full time at our offices in Seattle.

Are Fellows provided a relocation stipend?

No. IHME does not provide relocation stipends.

What type of visa do you offer for international Fellows?

IHME offers a J-1 visa for Post-Graduate Fellows who are non-US citizens. To learn about the J-1 visa parameters, please visit: http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1267.html.

IHME will facilitate the visa process from the US side, and incoming Fellows will be responsible for visiting a US consulate and completing the visa process. IHME will reimburse you for the SEVIS fee when you are in Seattle.

What is the salary and benefit package offered to PGFs?

Post-Graduate Fellows earn an annual salary of $50,000 US dollars and are eligible for medical, dental, and vision insurance. To learn about the different types of insurance packages Fellows can choose, please visit: http://www.washington.edu/admin/hr/benefits/.

Please note that Post-Graduate Fellows are not eligible for retirement packages.

What types of projects do PGFs work on, and how are they assigned?

PGFs are assigned to one or two ongoing projects at IHME according to their skills and background and the needs of the projects. To learn about ongoing research projects, please visit our Research page.

What kinds of work are PGFs assigned?

Work assignments vary across project. Typically, PGFs work on multiple aspects of their assigned project, performing everything from literature searches to data analysis to the development of new statistical and analytical methods. PGFs also are expected to take on leadership roles in their projects by driving the research agenda.

Are there other positions at IHME for MDs or PhDs other than the Post-Graduate Fellowship?
