Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih

Dr. Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih was appointed Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia in October 2009. One goal during her term as Minister of Health (2009-2014) is to achieve universal coverage in social health insurance. She shares the vision of the Ministry of Health -- a just, self-sufficient, and healthy society -- and introduced five taglines emphasizing key themes of Indonesian health development: pro-poor, inclusive, responsive, effective, and clean.

She began her career in 1979 as clinician in the Jakarta Pertamina Hospital. She joined the public health service in 1980 as the Head of Waipare Health Center in East Nusa Tenggara Province for three years. In 1983, she moved to Jakarta and continued working in the public health service with the Jakarta Provincial Health Office until 1997, when she joined the National Institute of Health Research and Development (NIHRD) of the Ministry of Health. She was appointed as Director of the Center of Biomedical Research and Program Development, NIHRD, in 2006. During her career as a researcher, she published various scientific publications on communicable diseases in national and international journals. In 2001, she worked as Temporary Technical Advisor in the Department of Communicable Disease Surveillance and Response at the headquarters of the World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland.

She holds Master of Public Health and Doctor of Public Health degrees from the Harvard School of Public Health and received her MD from the University of Indonesia, Jakarta.
