Ana Langer

Dr. Ana Langer, MD, is the Coordinator of the Dean's Special Initiative on Women and Health at the Harvard School of Public Health and a Visiting Professor in its Department of Global Health and Population.

Dr. Langer is a physician specializing in pediatrics and neonatology, as well as a reproductive health expert, public health researcher, and advocate for women’s reproductive health and rights.

Until recently, she was the President and CEO of EngenderHealth, an international non-profit organization working to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and men. During Dr. Langer’s tenure, EngenderHealth experienced significant growth and expanded its programmatic portfolio to include maternal health and unsafe abortion, in addition to family planning, gender, and HIV/AIDS.

Before joining EngenderHealth, Dr. Langer served as the Population Council's Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean . Under her leadership, her team and regional partners identified needs and opportunities in the sexual and reproductive health field, attracted funding for numerous new projects, and provided technical assistance to governmental and non-governmental organizations throughout the region. From January 2003 to September 2004, Dr. Langer served in the dual role of Acting Director of the Population Council’s global Reproductive Health Program.

Previously, she was the Chair of the Department of Research in Women and Children’s Health, National Institute of Public Health, Mexico,  where she established and directed the Master’s Program in Reproductive Health, the first program of its kind in Latin America.

Dr. Langer has conducted extensive research on maternal mortality, the psychosocial factors that affect pregnancy, delivery and postpartum outcomes, the quality of maternal health care, emergency contraception and unsafe abortion. She is a specialist in the design and evaluation of public health interventions and the creation of linkages between research and policy, including health sector reform. She has extensively published the impact-oriented results of her work in academic journals and books, and opinion articles in newspapers and magazines.

Dr. Langer is the co-chair of IPPF’s International Medical Advisory Panel and also serves on other specialist boards, such as the WHO Advisory Commission on Health Research  and the International Advisory Panel of the Fundacion CARSO in Mexico.
